Aretha Franklin’s Story of Caution

​Aretha Franklin taught us a lot about respect and responsibility. After her passing, her two son's battled over her estate for nearly 5 years. Franklin had written multiple wills throughout her lifetime. Her sons fought over which version should prevail, an older notarized version or the most recent handwritten version. It was a grand example of how important a Will is for bringing peace to your family after you pass.

Franklin was smart. Her handwritten Will met the following guidelines that helped it hold up in court:

1. Stated she was of sound mind and that the document was her last will and testament
2. Written entirely in her handwriting with no corrective marks 
3. Dated
4. Signed 

However, Franklin’s last Will was missing some elements that would have made it even stronger compared to the 3 older Wills that were found in her home. One of which was notarized.
